Getting the Lowdown on Ear and Body Candling
By Jili Hamilton
It does seem a strange remedy but more and more people are realising that, when properly applied, ear treatment candles can have a beneficial effect on a multitude of problems. Through being sold and used by people who have no real idea of how they work, certain myths have grown up which we need to dismiss right away: candling is not aimed at cleaning the ears and the candles do not function on a chimney principle, but do you really know what they do?
Background
Ear candling has been around for thousands of years and is practised in many parts of the world. It is sometimes considered to be an old wives’ remedy and how many of these are we rediscovering today with amazing results? Simple in themselves, ear candles are hollow tubes made from cotton or linen impregnated with wax and sometimes herbs.
The Treatment
The candle is placed just over the entrance to the ear canal and the top is lit. As it burns it sends a gentle warmth spiralling down and it is this which massages the ear drum and stimulates the immune system, helping us to maintain or recover perfect health. The acupuncture points in the ear are also stimulated and six of the main meridians (energy lines according to the Chinese system) in a human body concerned with allergies either start or terminate at a point between the nose and the ear. Candles can in fact be used anywhere on the body (although the ears must be treated first) and patients do not even need to undress.
Some of the Uses for Candles
* Acne
* Age-related hearing loss
* Allergies
* Balance problems
* Constipation
* Fat Arm (after an operation to remove cancerous lymph nodes)
* Glue ear
* Insomnia
* Mastoiditis
* Migraine
* Painful menstruation
* Pressure problems when flying
* Sinusitis
* Sleep apnoea
* Stress
* Tinnitus
There are certainly many more and, even after over 25 years, I’m still finding new ones. My students laugh when they ask about treating a health problem on which I have no information because my answer is always: “You can try”. As gently holding a candle over the entrance to the outer ear can do no harm (there are one or two contraindications), it is indeed worthwhile trying because that’s how I’ve discovered much of what I know.
